About

About the studio

The studio is well suited to record one or two acoustic (including voice) instruments at a time very well, and is ideally suited to acoustic performance, whether classical, jazz or alternative. At its technical core is the combination of a few great microphones amplified by outstanding electronics in an acoustically treated environment with a Steinway grand piano. You can find recording studios with more equipment (good for bands), but will be hard pressed to find studios with better equipment. At its artistic core, the owner/recording engineer ("chief cook and bottle washer") has considerable experience on both sides of the microphone and is a very experienced recording coach, which means your recording experience will be fun and go smoothly.

About the owner

Larry Tarof ("Dr. L") is an Ottawa-based musician with a loyal following within the Ottawa music scene. He enjoys a reputation for outstanding pop/musical theater arrangements, choral arrangements, live performances, and original compositions. He has appeared live hundreds of times, gigs frequently as a jazz/cocktail pianist (guitar and vocals, too!), and for many years has been the busiest musical theater accompanist in Ottawa. His growing body of original works (100+) includes pop/rock, jazz, musical theater and sacred music. He has done work for hundreds of clients in Canada and the U.S, including Mirvish Productions, Juno award winner Jennifer Gould and many others. Within Ottawa's Jewish community, he presently directs two choirs and a Klezmer band at Agudath Israel, and runs the music program and is the Kabbalat Shabbat soloist at Temple Israel. At the studio, he has produced many demos, hundreds of backup tracks, many arrangements and fully produced CDs. Music runs in the family: his son Daniel appears on guitar in two of these CDs: "Fearless" (2005) and "Shneur" (2008), and he collaborated on both "Fearless" and a new musical "Olympus" with daughter Jenny. "Dr. L" was profiled in 2005 on CJOH-TV's popular "Regional Contact" and has appeared at other times on television in Ottawa. He is presently involved with multiple original projects and runs a private teaching studio. "Dr L." is also a research scientist, having earned his a Ph.D. in semiconductor physics, and even had CEO, CTO and "Principal Scientist" stints in the high tech world in between bouts of being a full-time musician. This eclectic background distinguishes him as uniquely multi-talented with producer/entrepreneurial/musicianship skills which enhance the reputation of his studio, "Dr L's Music", which has been in operation since 1992.
